Hawaiian Electric's Path to 100% Clean Energy: Achieving the 2045 Goal

Hawaiian Electric is determined to increase the use of clean energy in Hawaii and reduce dependence on imported oil. The company has set a goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2045. To reach this goal, Hawaiian Electric utilizes distributed energy resources (DER), such as private solar systems on rooftops and businesses. The state of Hawaii is committed to generating all of its electricity from clean, renewable sources by the year 2045. This will reduce supply costs and bring electricity closer to the national average. Customers who cannot or choose not to install private rooftop solar systems can still benefit from clean, renewable electricity by subscribing to a renewable energy installation.

Hawaiian Electric is dedicated to achieving the state's goal of 100% renewable energy and net zero carbon emissions from power generation by 2045. The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has acknowledged the challenges in Hawaiian Electric's plan and urged them to take swift action to implement the parts of the plan in the short term. The state's approach involves diversifying its energy portfolio and connecting and improving its power grids across the eight islands. This will enable Hawaiian power companies to move forward with certain short-term measures within the framework of that vision, such as large-scale renewable energy procurement, community-based renewable energy, responding to demand and distributed energy resources, and improving the electricity grid on each island. The Hawaii State Energy Office (HSEO) is striving to develop cost-effective ways to generate energy for Hawaiians. This includes finding alternatives to battery systems owned by customer-based utility companies, such as pumped hydropower, thermal and electrical storage options, or energy storage based on demand.

The HSEO also supports producers who are striving to develop innovative and cost-effective ways to generate energy for Hawaiians. The decision also expressed support for the community-based renewable energy program, which offers customers a subscription to community solar projects with 20% higher rates between 5 p.m. Hawaiian Electric Companies is tasked with powering several island grids with 100% green energy by 2045 and has finally won regulatory approval for a plan to achieve this, as long as it includes customers and third parties in the mix. Hawaiian Electric is taking a multi-pronged approach toward achieving its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045. This includes utilizing distributed energy resources such as private solar systems on rooftops and businesses, diversifying its energy portfolio, connecting and improving its power grids across the eight islands, large-scale renewable energy procurement, community-based renewable energy, responding to demand and distributed energy resources, improving the electricity grid on each island, finding alternatives to battery systems owned by customer-based utility companies such as pumped hydropower, thermal and electrical storage options or energy storage based on demand, and supporting producers who are striving to develop innovative and cost-effective ways to generate energy for Hawaiians. Hawaiian Electric is dedicated to achieving its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045. With the help of customers and third parties, Hawaiian Electric can make this goal a reality.
