Hawaii is a trailblazer in the energy revolution, boasting the highest levels of renewable energy, the highest percentage of citizens with solar energy on their roofs, and the most ambitious goal of any state to reach 100% renewable electricity by 2045. To make this dream a reality, Hawaiian Electric has teamed up with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to conduct a preliminary study to identify potential areas of Oahu, the Island of Hawaii, and Maui that could be suitable for future renewable energy projects. This research will help manufacturers ensure that customers in the Hawaiian solar market can use the widest possible range of their products, and also help them prepare for the needs of emerging markets elsewhere. Hawaiian Electric has also set a new goal of reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2040, five years ahead of the deadline set by the state. To ensure stability and reliability, Hawaiian Electric and other stakeholders are evaluating energy trends and simulating future grid scenarios. The findings from this research could help other islands, and even continental states, implement similar solutions. To support this transition to renewable energy sources, Hawaiian Electric is installing devices to minimize voltage fluctuations in local circuits with a high level of distributed solar generation.
An interactive map of proposed renewable energy zones for potential future energy projects is also available. Hawaii's small geographic size and population, abundant renewable resources, and political will to transform its energy economy make it an ideal candidate to test a large-scale transition to clean and renewable sources. With the help of Hawaiian Electric and other stakeholders, the state is setting an example for other regions looking to make a similar transition.
